Student Spotlight: Learning and Growth
A Rise Calgary practicum student reflects on their experience working within a community resource centre, from first impressions and daily learning moments to the challenges and growth that shaped their understanding of social services and community support.
At Rise Calgary, practicum students provide an opportunity to gain hands-on experience while making a meaningful impact in the community. We recently spoke with one of our practicum students, Nisreen Dawwas, about their experience, what they learned, and how their time at Rise Calgary has helped shape their future goals.
Discovering Rise Calgary
Throughout my educational journey, I have been interested in learning about organizations that support families and communities. During my research, I discovered Rise Calgary and was impressed by its commitment to addressing the needs of families. I was fortunate that my school offered Rise Calgary as a placement agency, giving me the opportunity to learn more about its work firsthand.
First Impressions
My impression of Rise Calgary was positive. I was impressed by the variety of resources and services they offer to support vulnerable individuals and families, such as mobility coaching, financial coaching, and other programs. I also felt welcomed by the staff, who were friendly and supportive. The organization has a welcoming environment where I felt comfortable asking questions and seeking clarification.
A Meaningful Experience
My time at Rise Calgary was a valuable learning experience that strengthened my knowledge and skills for my future career. Through interacting with clients, I learned the importance of empathy, respect, and a client-centered approach. Seeing the positive impact of Rise Calgary’s services on individuals and families made this experience especially meaningful.
Overcoming Challenges
As a student, I did not have adequate knowledge of all the resources available to support clients. At the beginning, I was unsure which services to recommend when clients sought help. However, the staff were supportive and always willing to explain resources and involve students in the process. Their guidance helped build my confidence and allowed me to contribute more effectively.
Valuable Lessons Learned
One of the most valuable lessons I learned is that small actions can make a big difference. Even basic support, such as providing food, can have a significant impact on people's lives. I also learned that many clients come to the agency feeling lost and unsure of what they need. Through empathy, active listening, and thoughtful questions, staff help clients identify their needs and connect them with the right resources and support.
What Surprised Me Most
What surprised me most was how the Rise Calgary staff across different locations stay connected through regular meetings. They make sure everyone is updated, working toward the same goals, and sharing ideas on the best ways to support clients. This teamwork also helps them identify ways to improve their services.
Who Would Benefit from a Placement at Rise Calgary?
Rise Calgary is a valuable placement opportunity for students who want to develop their social work skills, gain practical experience, and learn about community resources. It helps students understand the challenges individuals and families face and how to support clients professionally. Rise Calgary also benefits vulnerable individuals and families by providing guidance, resources, and support to help them navigate challenges.
Looking to the Future
I believe the end of my practicum at Rise Calgary is the beginning of a new journey. The knowledge, skills, and confidence I gained during my time there will support me as I continue to grow and pursue my future career.
Final Thoughts
I truly appreciate the work and services that Rise Calgary provides and their commitment to continuously improving and understanding clients’ needs. I have seen the positive impact the organization creates, and I believe it has the potential to continue growing and becoming an even stronger organization that reflects the importance of supporting individuals and families.
