At Rise Calgary, we can help clients apply for the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) if they are unsure how to complete the application or have difficulty applying online through a My Service Canada Account (MSCA), especially if they do not already have one set up.
If clients prefer to complete a paper application, we can print the forms and assist with filling them out manually.
For those interested in creating an MSCA, we can also help with the setup process. However, if digital verification is unavailable, Service Canada may mail a security code to your home address to complete the registration. This process can take approximately 7–10 days. In some situations, completing the paper application may be the faster option.
What to Bring to Your Appointment
To help make the process smoother, please bring the following information if available:
- Your Social Insurance Number (SIN)
- Direct deposit banking information
- Information about benefits or pensions received from other countries
- Information about your children if you or your partner received Family Allowance benefits in the past
Choosing When to Start Your CPP Pension
One of the most important decisions is choosing when you would like your CPP retirement pension to begin. You can start receiving CPP as soon as you become eligible, or you can choose a later month and year.
You may find it helpful to use the official CPP retirement income calculator to estimate your payments:

If you are currently struggling financially, it may make sense to start benefits as soon as possible. However, the decision ultimately depends on the applicant’s personal circumstances and financial goals.
CPP and Taxes
CPP payments are considered taxable income. During the application process, you can choose how much tax you would like deducted before payments are deposited into your account.
You can estimate taxes using tools such as the
Canadian Income Tax Calculator
It is generally advisable to request at least a small amount of tax withholding. If too much tax is deducted, the excess may be refunded during tax season. Choosing no tax deductions is also an option, but it could mean owing taxes later when filing your return. This decision is entirely up to the applicant.
Submitting Your CPP Application
Once the application is complete, it can either be mailed or dropped off in person.
The mailing address can be found on the last page of the application form. Since mailing addresses vary by province, be sure to double-check the correct address before sending it.
Alternatively, applications can be dropped off at the nearest Service Canada office. Some applicants prefer this option because staff can date-stamp the documents upon receipt, which may provide peace of mind if there are concerns about mail delays or lost documents.
For additional questions about CPP, you can contact Service Canada at 1-800-277-9914. Be prepared to provide your SIN for identity verification.
